The Ainu People

HISTORY

Hokkaido was long the domain of the aboriginal Ainu people. Serious Japanese settlement of the island began in 1869, when the territory which was then called Yezo province, was renamed Hokkaido (“North Sea Provice”).

PRESENT

Hokkaido is the second largest island of Japan and comprises the largest and northernmost prefecture. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city.
